- AISD Tackles Bullying with School Events January 24, 2012 - 96 views
South Austin schools are becoming meccas of Austin Independent School District’s efforts to eliminate social traumas, like bullying, name calling, and intolerance, and upcoming events hopefully will have a huge effect on the student body. With approximately 1 in 7 students either a bully or the victim of a bully (according to bullyingstatistics.org), AISD is taking proactive steps to improve student experiences. This week, Oak Hill Elementary is celebrating its status as a No Place for Hate campus, a national program that “incorporates anti-bias education into the campus experience and culture,” by having daily spirit events to celebrate No Name Calling Week. The students will enjoy dressing up in gold to celebrate the Golden Rule of treating others the way they want to be treated, wearing red to remind each other to do good on Random Acts of Kindness Day, and more. Each class also is encouraged to participate in a project that incorporates technology into spreading the messages of the week, and each project will be shared at Friday assemblies for the rest of the school to see. - New IMAX Theater Delights Travis Country West Homeowners December 16, 2011 - 115 views
Southwest Austin doesn’t want for much these days, as new housing and shopping developments have begun filling the gaps in available conveniences. Now, the area boasts another perk most other parts of Austin don’t have – a towering IMAX screen at the AMC Barton Creek theater. The theater, located just inside Barton Creek Square Mall, is a convenient drive from Travis Country West and can make for a great outing for the entire family. An advanced screening of Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol made it clear this theater is one of the best places to see action and special effects films – those flicks that won’t cut it on even the best of televisions, the ones you just have to see in the theater. Viewers had the same visceral, edge-of-the-seat sensation that comes with watching a 3D movie, without having to wear the goofy glasses. One can only imagine what a 3D movie on the IMAX screen would be like! Read More >>
- Butler’s Pantries in Travis Country West December 1, 2011 - 236 views
Thanks to Tim Curry’s character in the 1985 classic Clue, we all know that butlers “buttle” (as well as keep everything tidy and take charge of the kitchen and dining room), but what, exactly, is a butler’s pantry? Historically, the butler’s pantry was a small room where the family silver and formal china were stored, as well as an area for serving meals, typically located between the formal dining room and the kitchen. In Europe, the butler often slept here, as it was his job to guard the silver. Since having a butler isn’t typically part of the equation in contemporary homes, the space has since become more of a wet bar and prep area, as well as a display area for design elements and other decorative items (think pretty platters that you only pull out once a year). It also has evolved in its look and location, as well as its purpose. Butler’s pantries are certainly making a comeback, thanks to both their form and function, and a great place to find homes with these spaces already in them is the Travis Country West subdivision in Southwest Austin. It’s no wonder this would be a concern for those living in the area.
