AISD Tackles Bullying with School Events

South Austin schools are becoming meccas of Austin Independent School District’s efforts to eliminate social traumas, like bullying, name calling, and intolerance, and upcoming events hopefully will have a huge effect on the student body. With approximately 1 in 7 students either a bully or the victim of a bully (according to bullyingstatistics.org), AISD is taking proactive steps to improve student experiences.
This week, Oak Hill Elementary is celebrating its status as a No Place for Hate campus, a national program that “incorporates anti-bias education into the campus experience and culture,” by having daily spirit events to celebrate No Name Calling Week. The students will enjoy dressing up in gold to celebrate the Golden Rule of treating others the way they want to be treated, wearing red to remind each other to do good on Random Acts of Kindness Day, and more. Each class also is encouraged to participate in a project that incorporates technology into spreading the messages of the week, and each project will be shared at Friday assemblies for the rest of the school to see.
In early February, the entire district will gather at Austin High School for a Diversity Fair. From 9am to noon on Saturday, February 4, visitors will be exposed to the wide variety of cultures and heritages that make up the AISD student body, which represents over 90 languages, as students and their families host booths to share information with guests.
AISD and its schools are making major efforts to create safe, enjoyable learning environments for their students. If you are looking for a home in AISD’s service area, including in an area near Oak Hill Elementary and its No Place for Hate campus, a home in the Travis Country West subdivision may be just right for your family, and the Austin real estate agents at Regent Property Group can help you find that home.
